What every kid needs is an adult that remembers
being a kid. That's what mentoring is all about. You don't need a fancy degree.
You just need to be yourself, and share who you are. It's really that easy. And
chances are if you put a little time in, you're both going to get a lot out if it.
So be a mentor and share the experience.
You Can Make A Difference
Being a mentor is about communicating in a meaningful way. It's about being yourself
and sharing your experience and your perspective on life. As a mentor, you'll form
a one-to-one relationship with a student or adult learner who needs your support
and attention. You'll be a positive role model and a trusted friend. And, as with
any friendship, you'll get a lot out of it, too.
Do you have an hour a week to share?
That's all it takes! You volunteer to spend an hour a week with your mentee, or
more if you prefer, in a school or community-based setting. You choose a time that's
convenient for you.
How Do You Become A Mentor?
Just call MentorAlabama today 334-242-5414 or e-mail
MentorAlabama@adeca.alabama.gov. We'll be happy to answer
your questions or point you in the right direction if you decide to volunteer. Just look
under the programs tab and contact any mentoring organization in your area to receive
instruction on how to begin the application process. Each mentoring organization is different
in regard to the type of mentees they serve, scheduling, and program settings they prefer.
Once you complete a background check, you'll attend an orientation session and training
workshop, where you'll receive a manual with guidelines, helpful tips and suggested activities
to do with your mentee. You'll ask questions and meet other new mentees.
